Xanadu was a bit of a train wreck as far as modern movies go. According to Olivia Newton-John, they were still writing it while they were filming. Still - if you look at it as a Musical, it's not all that bad. The plot on most musicals is mostly non-existent - I'd be hard pressed to think of one that would even be remembered without the songs and dance.

So - if you look at Xanadu strictly as an old line classic musical, it holds up pretty well. It produces a lot of good songs and had a couple of very good dance scenes. I remember the billboard for some musical, can't remember which one, that advertised "All Singing - All Dancing." If you could toss Xanadu into a way-back machine and transport it back to the golden age of musicals, I think it would have fared much better with the critics and audiences. 1980 just wasn't the right time.
